“Neem oil can be applied neat to the skin to heal and soothe patches of inflamed, red and itchy skin.”
Verity Skincare was founded in September 2008 by Denise Baldock. Denise trained with Kolborn Borseth, a Norwegian complementary health practitioner. Kolborn has been producing natural, and ethically sourced cosmetics for 22 years for his company Aromantic. As far as possible all Verity Skincare ingredients are sourced from Aromantic. Where this is not possible, they are alternatively sourced from Neil’s yard and Infinity foods whom have similar principles to her own.
About Denise Baldock
![]() |
Denise has been a natural health practitioner since 2004. She specializes in clinical nutrition, massage and Reiki healing. She also teaches Reiki to small groups and holds public talks about health and nutrition. Her interest in natural cosmetics arose after working nutritionally with clients to help with skin conditions such as eczema and roseacea. |
Denise started research into external factors that affect skin health and health and well-being in general. This coupled with a few good quality charity shop book bargains on ‘Natural Remedies’ and ‘Natural Skincare’ inspired Denise to start creating her own natural cosmetics. You could say that by treating her clients from the inside out through nutrition, it was a natural development to also start treating people from the outside in! Healthy skin demands both!
Why Verity?
The dictionary definition of Verity is:
1. the state or quality of being true; accordance with fact or reality: to question the verity of a statement.
2. something that is true, as a principle, belief, idea, or statement: the eternal verities.
The term true is not a word that is often automatically linked to cosmetic companies in general, and maybe you don’t either? Their claims of what a product can and can’t do often mislead the general public, and some are just bare-faced (pun intended) lies! These claims combined with the British fear of ageing can make vulnerable people part with large sums of money on these promises. This is unfair and unethical. Verity Skincare aims to be completely honest and ‘true’ about both, the ingredients contained in their products, and also being clear and straightforward about what these ingredients can (and can’t )do for your skin. Verity Skincare will always put customers needs at the forefront of all that they do.
The Serious Bit
All Verity Skincare products are made from ingredients that are as close to their natural state as possible. The skin is a living breathing organ and 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our cells and bloodstream, and therefore has a very direct impact on our health status. It makes perfect sense to use materials that are close to nature so that we can work with the body’s natural state and not against it. Verity Skincare will use Organic materials wherever possible. Using only materials from Aromantic, Neil’s Yard and Infinity Foods ensures that all products are ethically sourced and are suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
Most skincare products on the market now (although this is improving) contain chemicals that are potentially harmful to the health of their customers. They are tested safe in an individual product but there is danger in the culmative effect of using many different types of these products over the years. Chemicals such as Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLS) and Propylene Glycol have been linked to skin irritation, eczema, dry skin, and asthma. These can be found in most cosmetic and cleaning products for they are cheap and effective at what they need to do e.g. making bubbles. Verity Skincare products are also free from Parabens, which have recently been linked with breast cancer. Safer and more natural alternatives have now been discovered and the presence of these potentially harmful chemicals are simply not necessary anymore.
Verity Skincare products are not, and cannot be completley free from artificial ingredients. It is necessary to use preservatives for all products; however these preservatives are manufactured as close to natural sources as possible. The detergents used for Verity Skincare are made from Coconut oil. Lactic Acid is added in 1 Verity product (Avocado and Lemon Cleansing Cream) to reduce the acidity of the product, making it safer to use on the skin and enabling it to have a longer shelf life.
The Fun Bit
Denise also chose the name ‘Verity’ (given to her by a treasured poetic friend) because it is an old-fashioned girly name. By accident, rather than design, Verity has turned into a special character all on her own!
Just because a product is natural, organic and ethical doesn’t mean that it has to look plain and uninspiring. Denise is motivated by all things vintage, and especially enjoys the glamorous style of the 1950’s. She wanted her packaging to be fun, with an old-style twist with a nod to this special decade. Verity Skincare products make very appealing gifts, something that looks fabulous and is truly good for the health of your nearest and dearest!
